Abstract

Extensive use of sensors and system automations tends to become a trend in our everyday life. In this manner, maritime traffic is monitored by advanced sensor systems, one of which is the Automatic Identification System, called AIS. The use of AIS systems in shipping is extensive and large numbers of data are produced; thus the task of analyzing this information becomes a laborious procedure. In this paper we analyze AIS data sets in order to propose methods and techniques for reducing the data without losing important information in order to produce sets of data that can be easily processed in real time. Furthermore, the deriving data are visualized so as to present that data reduction does not affect the visualized data which is a very common application of AIS data.
